Hands-Only CPR: The Simplest Lifesaving Skill You Can Learn
Hands-only CPR is a two-step technique for untrained bystanders responding to an adult who collapses: call 911, then push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. Caring People Rescue offers in-person and blended CPR courses if you're ready to certify.
- Recommended for untrained bystanders and adult collapse
- No mouth-to-mouth required
- Push at 100–120 BPM to the beat of 'Stayin' Alive'
- Continue until EMS or an AED arrives
Why it works
The blood in an adult's body still carries oxygen for several minutes after collapse. Compressions circulate that oxygen to the brain until advanced care arrives.
When NOT to use hands-only
Infants, children, drowning victims, drug overdose victims, and any patient whose arrest was caused by a breathing problem need rescue breaths.

Pairing with an AED
An AED is the single most effective tool for restarting a heart. If one is nearby, send someone to grab it while you continue compressions.
Frequently asked questions
- Is hands-only CPR as effective as full CPR?
- For witnessed adult collapse in the first few minutes, yes. For other scenarios, rescue breaths improve outcomes.
- Do I need certification to do hands-only CPR?
- No — anyone can perform it. Good Samaritan laws protect bystanders.
- How long do I keep going?
- Until EMS arrives, an AED tells you to pause, or the person starts breathing normally.
